Read | Psalm 127

Unless the Lord builds the house,

    the builders labor in vain.

Unless the Lord watches over the city,

the guards stand watch in vain.

In vain you rise early

    and stay up late,

toiling for food to eat—

for he grants sleep to those he loves.

Children are a heritage from the Lord,

    offspring a reward from him.

Like arrows in the hands of a warrior

are children born in one’s youth.

Blessed is the man

whose quiver is full of them.

They will not be put to shame

when they contend with their opponents in court.

Psalm 127v1

Unless the Lord builds the house,

    the builders labor in vain.

Unless the Lord watches over the city,

the guards stand watch in vain.

We—I, at least—can read this Psalm and fall into the negatives: it’s perfectly possible that my labors have been in vain, that my toil has been meaningless, and I have been working for my selfish gain over and against God’s will.

Yet this Psalm reveals something worthy of our joy—the Lord builds the house for us, and the Lord watches over the city for us! The Lord is for you, with you, and believe it or not, he covers all that you do with his lovingkindness. You are tasked with the work of the Lord and the Lord will infuse you with the means necessary to do it— “for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”

The Lord liberates what is dead and sin and restores it to be worthy of his kingdom. This applies to you, too—to your work and to your identity. May we rejoice in that truth today!
